Machu Picchu reopened after eight months of Corona closure.

The historic Inca city of Machu Picchu attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists to Peru every year. However, due to the corona pandemic, the Unesco World Heritage Site was closed for eight months. Now there was a ceremonial reopening.

Machu Picchu is reopened

The world-famous Inca site Machu Picchu in Peru is open to visitors again after being closed for months due to the corona pandemic. The most important tourist destination of the South American Andean state was reopened on Sunday (local time) with an ancient ritual. For safety reasons, only 675 visitors per day are allowed to enter the site. That is only 30 percent of the figure before the pandemic.

The Inca city of Machu Picchu in the Andes, built in the 15th century, is one of the largest tourist attractions in South America. It was added to the Unesco World Heritage List in 1983.

Machu Picchu reopened from March 2021

Machu Picchu was actually supposed to reopen in July. In total, the site was closed for eight months. Tourist-dependent Peru has suffered badly from the lack of visitors during the health crisis.

Japanese tourist was allowed to enter the world-famous Inca site- Jesse Katayama

A single exception was made in the Corona crisis, however: a Japanese tourist was allowed to enter the world-famous Inca site as the sole visitor on October 11th. Jesse Katayama, who has been stuck in Peru for months because of the pandemic, was given special permission by the responsible tourism authority in Cusco to visit the archaeological site — and only for him. Machu Picchu had been closed for more than seven months at the time.

After his visit to Machu Picchu, the 26-year-old boxing instructor published a photo of himself at the orphaned tourist destination and wrote: “The first person on earth to go to Machu Picchu since the lockdown is iiiiii”. In a video on the Tourism Board’s Facebook page, he added, “This is really amazing! Thanks.”

Katayama has been in Peru since March due to canceled flights and other freedom of movement restrictions. He had bought a ticket for Machu Picchu just a few days before the declaration of a health emergency in Peru.
