Lima is also the cultural metropolis of the country. In addition to many educational institutions, theaters, and museums, the city has the oldest university in South America, the University of San Marcos, founded in 1551.

Lima — Capital of Peru

In the center of the old town, which is laid out like a chessboard in the typical Spanish colonial style, there are other representative buildings from the colonial era next to the Plaza de Armas with the cathedral from the 16th century. However, parts of the old town, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were almost completely destroyed by severe earthquakes in the 17th and 18th centuries. Therefore, historical and newer buildings often mix in the city.

Lima was founded in 1535 by the Spanish conqueror FRANCISCO PIZARRO after the defeat of the Inca Empire. PIZARRO was murdered a few years later in Lima, where his mummy is still kept in the cathedral. During the colonial period, Lima, as the capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru, was the leading city on the west coast of South America until the 18th century. It was the gateway to the Potosi silver mines in Bolivia, which were the main source of Spanish silver wealth until the late 18th century. In addition, the city had a trading monopoly for all goods produced in the viceroyalty.

So the research group continued their search and discovered a valley with abundant water and extensive cultivated fields. A place near the shores of the Pacific, with a good climate that delighted visitors, which is why they eventually chose it as the political, cultural, and financial center of the Spanish Crown, naming it the City of Kings, later known as Lima should.

Known as the city of Rimac, this fertile and vast territory, home to about 20,000 inhabitants, became the capital of Peru on January 18, 1535, a city that over the course of its almost 500 years of existence has produced several peculiarities that you will surely appreciate being surprised.

Peru Capital

A metropolis with the smallest church in the world

With 50 square meters, this small and colorful chapel in the center of Lima attracts numerous visitors for its great cultural value. Inside there is the main altar and a retable of St. Jude Thaddeus, who is considered the patron saint of work and hopeless situations. The church is very popular with Catholic believers.

The only capital in South America overlooking the sea

Because the city sits on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, in the 1960s Lima authorities decided to build a major coastal road to serve as a link between the northern and southern parts of the city. This important urban work, dubbed the Costa Verde (Green Coast), ensured that the people of Lima have easier and better access to the shoreline’s beaches, which have been so neglected in recent years, from various points in the city.

Today, this area is not only one of the main tourist attractions of the capital of Peru but also a popular place for families and sports people looking for a break from the city and who want to spend a moment of relaxation and well-being combined with a spectacular view of the sea.

Also worth mentioning is the typical Criollo cuisine of Lima, with tempting dishes based on fish and seafood, prepared and served in a variety of different and very high-quality restaurants.
